The LandTrust for Central NC in cooperation with the NC Zoo and NC Zoo Society, US Forest Service and volunteers have been working on reopening the Uwharrie to its historic length by purchasing property from willing landowners to fill in gaps in the Uwharrie Trail. Recent land acquisitions in the area of Little Long Mountain on the Randolph and Montgomery County line will allow us to reopen or relocate up to 8 miles of trail between Flint Hill Rd. (Jumping Off Rock Trailhead) and High Pine Church Rd.

The LandTrust purchased this property with loans and is seeking funds to make it a part of the national forest, but is already working to reestablish and re-open this lost section of trail for the public to enjoy.

Join us as we work on reopening a new section trail on Little Long Mountain at the Randolph – Montgomery County line. From the north drive down King Mtn. Rd, from the south drive up Thayer Rd. from the Ophir Community. The road changes names at the county line. There is parking on the east side at the gate.

We can meet at the Ophir Community Parking Area at the intersection of Ophir and Flint Hill Roads at 8:30 or you can drive on up to the trail crossing at the county line.

Note there is a bridge replacement just west of the Dark Mountain parking area on Flint Hill Rd. and approaching from the east may require a long detour. We recommend you drive in from the west on Lassiter Mill Rd. or Ophir Rd.

We’ll lop, rake, and grub in toward the top of Little Long Mountain, about ¾ of a mile. Over time we’ll work our way down to Poison Fork and connecting to Forest Service trail at Poison Fork down to Jumpinoff Rock and Dark Mountain Trailhead. This is the start of reconnecting 8 miles of historic Uwharrie Trail. We’ll work toward the north from Little Long Mountain in the fall. We will work past lunch, but you are welcome to stay as long as you desire. We can help coordinate rides from Greensboro and Raleigh areas if needed.
