Uwharrie Halloween Hike followed by Ghost Tales Under the Stars with Charlotte Ross

Friday, November 1st, 2013

We hope you can join us for a haunted Halloween adventure in the wild and wonderful Uwharries! The Uwharrie Mountains are home to many legends and ghost stories passed down through the generations, and to celebrate our haunted heritage, The LandTrust will be hosting our first ever ghost tale event on Friday November 1st!

The festivities will begin with a late afternoon hike, meeting at the Thornburg Trailhead on Lassiter Mill Road at 3:00pm. We will hike in to the Birkhead Wilderness Area and venture off the beaten path to see the old Cooper cemetery and hear one of the classic ghost tales of the Uwharries that has been attributed to that very spot.

Then join us afterward back near the trailhead at the Thornburg House, built in 1855 and listed the national historic register, and newly restored and open to the public for the first time. Here we will have a cookout and bonfire starting at 5:00pm, with option to camp out under the stars. As dusk approaches, we will gather round to hear ghost tales from famous ghost story historian Charlotte Ross, also known as the “Legend Lady,” a noted storyteller, folklorist, and Appalachian State University Professor.

Charlotte has collected more than 400 ghost stories of the Appalachians, researching the people and places that inspire tales of supernatural or strange encounters, which she says gives them an authenticity and “stirs an atavistic fear.” Charlotte says “the best legends are those that are redolent with social details so you can look into that time and place for a moment.” We are so excited to have Charlotte here in our Uwharries to share some of her fascinating stories with us.

Please RSVP by October 25th for this event to Crystal by email at crystal@landtrustcnc.org or by phone at 336-633-0143. As always, all LandTrust events are free and open to the public. The LandTrust is a 501(c)3 charitable organization working to preserve and protect important natural areas, family farms, and rural landscapes in the southern central Piedmont. All donations are tax-deductible.
