Hunters and anglers were among the first to crusade for wildlife protection and remain some of today’s most important conservation leaders. Recognizing the importance of North Carolina’s hunting heritage, The Land Trust has developed a Sportsman’s Initiative. Our mission with the development of this initiative is to:

“Connect Sportsmen and Sportswomen to Local Conservation.”

Since the spring of 2017, The Land Trust’s Sportsman Access Program (SAP) has allowed SAP members to access Land Trust-owned property for hunting. This permit draw system, much like the permitted system used by most state wildlife agencies, allows SAP members to select specific dates for a chance to hunt dove, deer, feral hog, waterfowl, or turkey on Land Trust-owned property (this does not include privately owned conservation easements). If / when a member is drawn, they acquire private hunting access on a designated section of Land Trust-owned property for up to a week. Dues garnered from sportsman memberships will be utilized for conservation funding.

The Sportsman Access Program gives our members a chance to see their conservation dollars at work!

Located in the heart of the Uwharries, this Land Trust Property contains 5 hunting blocks and provides approximately 1,500 acres to pursue deer, turkey, and small game. The beautiful Uwharrie River runs through this parcel and native hardwoods and pines provide excellent wildlife habitat.

The Harrington Property, Moore County:

This 600-acre property is located near the Deep River in Carthage, NC. Each of the two hunting blocks is 250+ acres and features stream frontage, with prime habitat for deer and turkey. Parking for this property is located along Harrington Road or Underwood Road, where a walking path divides Blocks 1& 2.

The Petty Property, Moore County:

This 200-acre property is a single hunting block located in Carthage, NC. The Petty Property features .75 miles of frontage along McLendons Creek and contains pockets of wetland along the creek. Because this is a single hunting block, small game hunting with dogs is permitted.

Smith Branch Longleaf, Montgomery County:

Smith Branch Longleaf is a single hunting block that features a beautiful longleaf pine forest. Surrounded on three sides by the Uwharrie National Forest, this property is ideal for hunting deer and small game, and is known to have turkeys . Because this is a single hunting block, small game hunting with dogs is permitted.

Buzzard Mountain, Montgomery County:

Buzzard Mountain is located right off of Highway 24-27 in Montgomery County and is a single hunting block of approximately 50 acres. This property is great for hunting deer and turkey, and hunting small game with dogs is allowed.

The Sportsman Access Program is a permit draw system based on tiered membership enrollment.
All memberships are on an annual basis.
Members are given a list of dates and put in for the dates they wish to hunt during their annual membership.
There are no guaranteed hunts, and hunters are putting in for an opportunity to be drawn.
Three random Permit Draws per year will be conducted:
March (drawing for April-August dates)
August (drawing for September-October dates)
October (drawing for November-March dates)
Hunts are issued in week-long blocks (Sundays are designated as ‘scouting-only’ days). Land Trust properties are divided into equitable hunting units to ensure safe, quality hunts. Depending on the species hunted, there may be more or less units available to draw.
The Land Trust randomly draws winners from the pool of enrolled members.
Sportsman Members are allowed to bring one youth hunter, 15 and under, with the purchase of a Leopold Society Youth Membership ($15)
If selected for a hunt, members will be provided with a detailed map of the property, specific rules for the hunt, and an access permission pass valid for the dates selected.
All members must possess a valid NC hunting license.
Specified parking areas are designated. All access will be walk in only.
No permanent stands are permitted.
No baiting is allowed.
No dog hunting is allowed except during migratory bird hunting (dove and waterfowl).
Hunters are only allowed to hunt the assigned hunting units.
Sportsman members will be the only individuals hunting on their block during their week. However, some blocks are subject to agricultural practices and easement monitoring so farmers and other non-hunting individuals may be conducting occasional work on SAP blocks during the week.
Hunting with a partner(s) (maximum of 3 in a party) is permitted as long as all individuals are SAP members and sign up for the same blocks/dates.
