The Uwharrie Trail is a 20-mile long hiking trail running from Highway 24/27 near Troy, NC to Flint Hill Road near Ophir, NC. The trail is located on Uwharrie National Forest lands and is open year-round, marked with white blazes. The LandTrust is working with other conservation partners to extend the trail an additional 8 miles in the near future. Joe Moffit of Asheboro, an old-time trapper’s son, blazed the trail over 25 years ago. Moffit grew up in the Uwharrie Mountains during the Great Depression and learned to live off the land at an early age. Moffit was a Scoutmaster when he started the Uwharrie Trail project in 1972 to help his Boy Scouts earn their Eagle rank. They completed the now well-known path in 1975 and founded the Uwharrie Trail Club. [Source]
