Presentation of Spencer Woods Master Plan

Presentation of Spencer Woods Master Plan

The Town of Spencer and The Land Trust for Central North Carolina are co-hosting a presentation of the Spencer Woods Master Plan on Thursday, January 3rd, from 6-8 p.m. at the Spencer Town Hall at 600 S. Salisbury Avenue in Spencer. The event is free and open to all members of the public.

Spencer Woods, also known as “The Fred Stanback Educational Forest & Preserve,” is the 42-acre forest bounded by Rowan Avenue, Salisbury Avenue, and 17th Street in Spencer. The LandTrust has been working with the Spencer community for the last year on plans to develop the property into a passive nature preserve. The master plan was developed based on community feedback by Site Solutions, a landscape architecture and site planning firm, and approved by the Spencer Board of Alderman at their December meeting. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss implementation of the plan for improving public access and applying for grant funding from the North Carolina Parks & Recreation Trust Fund.

“Over the past year the support and momentum for the Spencer Woods project has increased exponentially, thanks in large part to the tremendous support from the Spencer Alderman and the community itself,” notes LandTrust Executive Director Jason Walser. “The master plan presentation is an important part of the grant process for the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, but it is also a way for the public to see how their feedback will be translated into a facility that the community will be proud of and can enjoy for generations.”

Also, Tuesday, January 1st, from 1-4 p.m., the Spencer Woods Trail Committee is hosting a work day on the Spencer Woods property. All are welcome. I hope you will join us for our New Year’s Work Day at Spencer Woods, from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1st. Some tools will be provided but please bring your own shovel, rakes, mattocks, bow saws, etc., if you have them. Committee chairman Bob Pendergrass will be the coordinator for the work day.
