HOW TO PLANT YOUR LONGLEAF PINE

Ensure the seedlings in their containers are thoroughly watered the evening prior to planting. Prepare the planting area by clearing away any competing vegetation, such as grasses and brush, to create a space of approximately one square foot for each seedling. When planting tree seedlings, aim to space them about 8 feet apart or in staggered rows 7 feet apart to establish an effective windbreak.

To plant the seedlings, insert a planting bar, shovel, or trowel vertically into the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches, equivalent to the length of the tree root and soil plug. Wiggle the tool back and forth to create a slit in the ground slightly wider than the diameter of the tree root.

Using the same planting tool, create another vertical slit about an inch or two from the first, and of similar depth. Pull the tool back first, away from the seedling, to close the ground around the bottom of the seedling, eliminating any air space that could dry out its roots. Then, push the tool forward towards the seedling to close the slit at the top of the plug.

Firmly tamp down the soil around the seedling with your foot.

Water the planted seedlings to settle the soil, remove any remaining air pockets, and provide moisture to the roots. While fertilizing is not essential, in drought conditions, ensure the trees receive adequate watering. Be vigilant for competing brush and grass, which can smother young trees soon after planting, and consider weeding during the initial years of growth.
