As many of you may have heard, North Carolina was recently added to the list of at least 29 other states that have detected CWD. A positive sample was found in a deer harvested in Yadkin County in December of 2021. In response to the positive detection, NC Wildlife Resources Commission has implemented new regulations. These regulations affect portions of the Point Property in Davie County. The Point Property Blocks 3, 4, 5, 6, and Wetlands will be included within the Secondary Surveillance Area. Point Blocks 1, 2, and 7 are not currently within either the surveillance areas.
The figure above shows the Secondary Surveillance Area (SSA) which is outlined in yellow. The red outline shows the Primary Surveillance areas (PSA).
The following NC Wildlife Commission regulations that are applicable to deer hunters on the Point Property (Blocks 3, 4, 5, 6, and Wetlands) are:
Carcass Transport Restrictions: The transportation of a deer carcass or parts of a carcass out of the PSA or out of the SSA is prohibited except for the following or as otherwise permitted by the Wildlife Commission:
- Meat that has been boned out such that no pieces or fragments of bone remain
- Caped hides with no part of the skull or spinal column attached
- Antlers, antlers attached to cleaned skull plates, or skulls free from meat or brain tissue
- Cleaned lower jawbones with teeth or cleaned teeth
- Finished taxidermy products and tanned hides
Therefore you are not allowed to take whole carcasses out of the SSA if you are hunting Point Property (Blocks 3, 4, 5, 6, and the Wetlands). Harvested deer must be taken to a processor within the SSA or the deer must be properly deboned and the carcass must be disposed of within the SSA. TRLT will compile a list of recommended processors within the SSA and distribute it prior to deer season.
Testing: Any hunter who harvests a deer in the SSA during the black powder season and from opening day through the second Sunday of all lawful weapons season shall submit a sample to the Commission for CWD testing. Hunters can take deer to NCWRC check stations, drop deer heads at drop off stations throughout the SSA, or take whole deer to Cervid Health Cooperators (such as approved taxidermists).
